TL;DR & Key Takeaways
Google now lets Shopify merchants switch on Business Agent — a branded AI assistant on Google Search that answers shopper product questions in the brand's voice — directly from the Google & YouTube app. The agent builds answers from your Merchant Center feed and your website, so the completeness of your listing data decides what it can say. Enable it, but audit the fields it reads first: structured attributes, variant facts, and the question-and-answer pairs in your feed.
- Since September 1, 2026, Shopify merchants can enable Google's Business Agent from the Google & YouTube app, not only Merchant Center.
- The agent answers shopper product questions on Google Search using your Merchant Center feed plus your website — listing facts, not ad spend, drive the answers.
- Eligibility requires a US store, verified Merchant Center, 50 approved free listings, and a claimed brand profile.
- Before publishing, audit material, fit, compatibility, and package-content facts on your top listings; add feed Q&A pairs for recurring buyer questions.
- AI performance insights now covers five countries and shows which conversational queries and attributes your products surface for.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does enabling Business Agent improve my Google rankings?
No. Google does not describe Business Agent as a ranking factor for AI Mode, Shopping, or ads, and FirstShelf does not claim activation guarantees visibility, citation, or sales. It puts your product data in front of shoppers who ask about your brand — the data's completeness decides whether that moment helps you.
I'm outside the US. Should I ignore Business Agent?
Not yet. Full customization currently requires a US-based store, but a lighter conversational feature has run on brand profiles in the US, Canada, Australia, India since 2025, and Google describes the US rollout as a beginning. Use the wait to complete feed attributes and Q&A pairs so your data is ready when the toggle reaches you.
Where do conversation starters and tone of voice get set?
The Google & YouTube app on Shopify handles activation basics — logo, brand colors, support contacts, welcome message defaults. Tone of voice and other advanced customizations are managed in Merchant Center under Marketing > Business Agent. A default Google-branded version runs until you publish a customized one.
How is this different from Shopify's own Agentic channel listing quality meter?
Shopify's meter grades listing completeness inside your admin. Business Agent is Google's surface that reads the synced version of those same fields and answers shoppers with them. They are complementary: fix what the meter flags and the agent has better material to answer from.
