GEO FAQ for marketplace sellers

Generative Engine Optimization questions—plus how FirstShelf audits listings without guaranteeing AI placement

What is Generative Engine Optimization (GEO)?

GEO is the practice of making product information easier for AI systems like ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, and Perplexity to understand, trust, and recommend. For marketplace sellers, that means clearer facts, better structure, complete details, and images that back up the listing. FirstShelf applies GEO through controlled listing audits—not guaranteed placement in any AI answer.

What does FirstShelf check?

FirstShelf runs a controlled readiness check on the listing information you submit. It identifies product facts, attributes, and image evidence that support a buyer question, plus gaps or ambiguities to review.

Does FirstShelf guarantee a ChatGPT recommendation?

No. FirstShelf does not control ChatGPT or other AI-shopping systems and does not guarantee recommendations, citations, rankings, traffic, or sales. It helps you improve the product information those systems may receive.

Does FirstShelf connect to Etsy or Shopify?

No. FirstShelf is an independent, standalone readiness tool. It does not connect marketplace accounts, publish listing changes, submit feeds, or claim marketplace endorsement.

Which platforms are supported?

The field-level readiness experience currently focuses on Etsy and Shopify. Other platforms can be entered manually only where the existing product supports them. Amazon is not publicly supported.

What does the FirstShelf Score mean?

The FirstShelf Score summarizes the controlled assessment of submitted listing information. Review its dimensions, weights, observations, inferences, and limitations in the methodology; it is not an external-visibility score.

What happens when I copy a suggested fix?

Copying gives you text to review. FirstShelf does not publish it to your marketplace account, and a copied suggestion is not proof that a listing changed.

How does FirstShelf assess images?

Image checks identify visible product evidence, text legibility, product visibility, scale, variation, and limitations where supported by the audit. They do not predict ranking or recommendation outcomes.

Can I use FirstShelf outside the United States?

You can use FirstShelf where the product is available, but ChatGPT shopping availability and surfaces vary. OpenAI currently documents shopping as live for ChatGPT users in the United States; see the methodology for the access date and source.
